River Report - March 10, 2016
Spring is on its way fast! I had an invite to jump down the PM with a buddy for a day off, and with the recent reports starting to look good, I wasn't going to pass it up. A solid float, grilled elk steaks, and a number of fresh steelhead to hand was just what the doctor ordered. Things are heating up well downstate, and we are not far behind, so look for the next couple weeks to be the start of spring steelhead season in northern Michigan. Reports are definitely promising with a fair number of fresh fish being caught, and the weather report on the way. If you need a guide on the PM...check out Alex Forsberg with River Ninja Outfitters or Devon Carr with H2O Outfitters. Both of these gents are top notch fly fishing guides on the PM, and I've known them for a long time.
We are looking at an "early" spring for steelhead. With the last two winters being brutal, this mild winter and early melt is leading towards a nice solid spring leading up to what should be a great summer season in northern Michigan. All guide dates are booking up quickly, so please call the shop to get on the books if you want to get out with a guide.
The shop will be limited this weekend, as we will be heading to the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo in Warren. Please come check us out, as well as the manufacturers, for what always ends up being a great show. The shop will still have leader/tippet/and flies available, so if you are up in Boyne Country this weekend and need to get out on the water, we will still have the basics for you. Eggs and hex nymphs are the top producers lately.
Other than that, get ready for spring, it'll be here before we know it!
