River Report - March 8, 2018
Well folks, the thaw has come and gone, and although we are back under a white blanket, the thaw will come again! Fishing has been pretty good as of late due to the warmer weather, and I can only assume that it will only improve as we head into spring. It's March - It's Spring...and before you know it, we'll be fishing warm evening spinner falls as the sun sets over the cedars.
In the meantime, get to the river. Steelhead fishing is improving daily as the water temps warm, and the freeze/thaw cycles have given some nice spate to the systems drawing fish in from the lake like a conveyor belt. Indi fishing is the name of the game right now, with streamers slowly gaining steam, but still on the sidelines until those temps jump a few degrees. Egg patterns are the top producer - it's hard to beat the willingness of Oncorhynchus mykiss to eat a round colorful object - 150 years of breeding in the Great Lakes doesn't contend with 100+ million years of evolution within the Pacific Rim chasing spawning salmon for those little micro balls of protein. Stonefly and hex nymphs are a good second. Regardless, the fish are willing to eat, and there are more of them each day.
It's time for the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo! The guys are packing and we'll be heading downstate for a great weekend with other passionate anglers. If you're in the metro-Detroit area, stop on by and say hello! Saturday & Sunday at the Macomb Community College Expo Center.
For those heading north for the weekend, the shop will remain open with limited hours. Fri March 9, Noon-5p; Sat March 10, 10a-6p; Sun March 11, Noon-6p. Flies, leader & tippet, and basic accessories will still be here to keep you on the water - the rest of the gear will be at the show. If you have any fishing-related questions, feel free to grab one of my cards and give me a call.
We've got some new guys joining the crew this year - I'll introduce them in future weeks. In the meantime, jump over to our team page to see who's coming aboard.
Looking forward to a great 2018 season! Think Spring!
