River Report - March 17, 2016
Steelhead season is off to a solid start here in the tip of the mitt! We are still on the upswing, but the rivers to the south are running hard, so we shouldn't be too far behind. Good reports from all the major systems as things are getting started, but definitely still plenty of time before we are in full swing.
Eggs have defintely been the go-to lately. As the water clears post-runoff, switch to little black stoneflies and green caddis patterns, where applicable. For now, big bright eggs have the aggressive fish on the bite.
Streamer fishing for brown trout should start picking up as well. I'll know a little more on that game next week after I get a few streamer floats under the belt on the new Adipose. As the water temps warm, the browns will become more aggressive heading into spring. Which by the way...spring is significantly "early" this year, which means we will hopefully be in a great position come trout opener. But I highly suggest you don't wait until opener to get out on the river, because things are happening right now!
The shop is stocked and ready to go for the season - new selections from Fishpond & Simms Fishing Products. Just got in a very significant shipment from Umpqua Feather Merchants and Catch Fly Fishing...more than doubling our fly inventory of years past, offering you as the angler more patterns to prove your prowress with the trout. Sage, Redington and Rio Products order should be here within the next 2 weeks, so check out some of the new rods and reels available from these great companies.
If you want to get out on the water, please give us a call. We still have a fair number of open guide dates for spring steelheand and early season trout.
